Top PageBackground
Since 1984, there has been a highly successful biennial series of International Conferences on Functional Grammar: The first ten conferences took place in Amsterdam - UvA (1984), Antwerp - UIA (1986), Amsterdam - VU (1988), Copenhagen (1990), Antwerp - UIA (1992), York (1994), Córdoba (1996), Amsterdam - VU (1998), Madrid - UNED (2000), Amsterdam - UvA (2002), Gijón. (2004).
The aim of ICFG is to further elaborate the model of Functional Grammar (FG) that was originally proposed by the late Simon Dik. A full treatment of FG may be found in: Dik, Simon C. 1997, The Theory of Functional Grammar. 2 Vols. Ed. by Kees Hengeveld. Berlin: Mouton de Gruyter. The most recent version of FG is called Functional Discourse Grammar. A sketch of this model may be found in: Hengeveld, Kees & J. Lachlan Mackenzie, ‘Functional Discourse Grammar’, In: Keith Brown (ed), Encyclopedia of Language and Lingistics, 2nd Edition. Oxford: Elsevier.
